- Barrackpore
Cantt and Mangal Pandey.

Mangal Pandey, the
Martyr and hero of First War of Independence was sepoy of the 34th
Regiment. The historical event that has taken place at Barrackpore
led by him.

allowed in Mangal Pandey Park? What are the facilities?

Picnics are not allowed
in Mangal Pandy Park. However, public can visit on payment of entry
fee of Rs.5/- per head while children below 12 years are not charged.
Cantt Board has provided play tools, benches, lawns for public
recreation.

- Ferry
services.
|
|
Ferry services on the
River Ganga between Barrackpore Cantt and Serampore are maintained by
Cantt Board and Srirampore Municipality for 3 years alternately for
the use of public. Presently it is under the management of
Cantonment. Ferry rate is Rs.2/- per passenger and timings for
operation of ferry from 6 A.M. to 10.45 P.M.

- Gandhi
Museum.
|
|
Gandhi Museum is
sistuated at Bungalow No.13 Riverside Road. It is a place of
historical importance and many personal belonging of Mahatma Gandhi
besides several paintings and depiction on events of Mahatma Gandhi's
life are maintained.

army permission is required to visit the places of tourist
interest ?

- Sepoy
Revolt of 1824.
|
|
Bindee Baba Tiwari was
the leader under whom the native sepoys of 47th Infantry rebelled and
took control of the Cantonment for 48 hours. British had to summon
the troops via Hooghly to quash the rebellion and all the rebels'
sepoys have mercilessly massacred. And Sepoy Bindee Tiwari was hanged
in chains and his body was left hanging as a warning to potential
recalcitrant.

Bindi Baba Tiwari was
the Sepoy of 47th Native Infantry. He was the leader under whom the
native sepoys rebelled and took control of Cantonment for 48 hours.
He was caught and later hanged in chains and his body was left
hanging as a warning to potential recalcitrant. Later offering were
made by Sepoys to his remains as he was considered a martyr. Folklore
made him 'Colone" Bindee and the temple stand today where his
body was left hanging.

- Rastraguru
Surendranath and Barrackpore Cantt.

Rastraguru Surendranath
was associated with Barrackpore during British regime. He was the
first chairman of North barrackpore Municipality. A degree college
has also been established in Barrackpore Cantonment in his name. His
residence can be reached routed through Cantonment.

- Are there
old Cemeteries and churches?

|
There are two old
Cemeteries in the name of High Commissioner of UK in India. One is
situated in orderly Bazar on the way to the Air Force Station and the
other in Sadar Bazar in between Army Quarter and Army LPG Supply.
This Cemetery is being used by Christian of the area. Presently it is
being managed by St. Bartholomew's Cathedral Church. List of grave
prior to 1947 is available under Heritage structure.
